There is a need to create awareness on road safety and traffic rules to prevent accidents. As many as 1.2 million people are killed and 30 million are injured annually in the accidents that occur across the country, said City Police Commissioner T R Suresh.
Speaking at the 30th Road Safety Week programme, organised jointly by district administration, Transport department and Police department here, on Monday, he said the increase in the number of accidents is a cause of concern.
“The public should come to the rescue of accident victims. The videographing of the accident and posting it on social media is not a good trend.”
As a part of the Road Safety Week, students took out a rally from Hampankatta. During the rally, the students held placards to create awareness about road safety.
The Red FM Radio distributed 50 helmets free of charge to those who were riding bikes without wearing helmets at various junctions in the city.
The students of Roshani Nilaya College staged street plays at main junctions to create awareness on road safety.
On February 5, police will create awareness on road safety and traffic rules for bus drivers, auto drivers and school vehicle drivers. Further, free eye check-up camp will be organised for vehicle drivers.
The police will also create awareness in schools. On February 6, essay writing, painting and pick and speak competitions will be organised for school and college students.
In addition, first aid training will be held on February 7.
As a part of the Road Safety Week, the police will conduct a drive against use of phone while driving, driving without wearing seat belt, use of harsh horns, lorries discharging waste water on road, driving without possessing driving licence and fitness certificate and drunken driving.
