Bengaluru: Former minister and Congress MLC Umashree on Tuesday drew attention to the shortage of PhD guides at the University of Mysore (UoM), and urged the government to address the problem.
Responding to his party colleague, Minister for Higher Education Dr M C Sudhakar assured the Council that the government was compiling a list of professors at the varsity’s many constituent colleges who are eligible to guide PhD candidates. “The guidelines laid down by University Grants Commission in 2018 stipulate that a professor can guide a maximum of eight doctoral candidates, leaving several PhD scholars without guides,” he said.
The government will take necessary steps to address the shortage of guides, said Sudhakar, urging PhD scholars taking more than five to six years, to complete their research at the earliest. “We will apprise students of the need to complete their research through varsity syndicate,” he said.
