Here is a traffic cop who joined the offenders for a cause.

Lokesh K, a traffic head constable, went beyond his call of duty when he learnt that the college student he had just penalised for not wearing helmet, was in fact rushing to donate blood with a friend.

Lokesh hopped on his bike, followed the students to the hospital and donated a unit of blood.

Udhay and Dhanush, both students of New Horizon College in Marathahalli, had taken a friend’s two-wheeler at HSR Layout and were rushing towards K S Layout on Tuesday evening for donating blood. Their teacher’s relative was to undergo a surgery the next morning.

Lokesh, attached to Kumaraswamy Layout Traffic Police Station, was on duty at Sarakki junction around 5.30 pm when he spotted the two students approaching him. The pillion rider was not wearing a helmet. Lokesh intercepted the bike and issued a challan of Rs 100.

He asked the students why they were in a hurry and they told him they were rushing to a nearby hospital to donate blood to the ailing relative of their physical education teacher. The constable decided to chip in after learning that the blood group of the patient was the same as his, A+ve.

He informed his senior at the spot and followed the students to Sagar Hospital on his bike. The blood was later exchanged with another private hospital in Banashankari where the patient’s surgery was conducted the following morning. Udhay said the surgery was successful and the patient was stable.

“My perception of city traffic police was different till last evening. Now, I have newfound respect for them,” Udhay said.

Lokesh’s seniors lauded him. May his tribe grow, is all that they hope.
