Vijayapura: In a major crackdown on microfinanciers, the district police on Thursday carried out searches at houses and offices linked to 104 microfinance institutions (MFI) and illegal moneylenders, across the district.

During the raid, 37 moneylenders were found in possession of unaccounted cash, bonds, blank cheques, pahanis, bank passbooks and other records.

“The police have seized Rs 62.29 lakh cash, 55 gram gold jewellery, 489 blank bonds, 285 blank cheques, 95 pass books and other records, during the raid,” SP Laxman Nimbargi told reporters. “The seized material and documents will be submitted to the deputy commissioner’s office and action will be initiated against those found guilty of illegal transactions,” the SP said.
