Counting of votes for the recently concluded gram panchayats elections will begin in 176 taluk headquarters on Friday.

As many as 94,348 candidates contested the polls held in two phases for 5,835 gram panchayats. As many as 8,690 were elected unopposed.

The first phase of polls was held on May 29 and the second phase on June 2. The elections were fought without party symbols. The counting of votes will commence at 8 am in the taluk headquarters and may continue till late evening, according to State Election Commissioner Srinivasachary.

He said he was expecting early poll results in Bidar, where electronic voting machines were used. In the rest of the State, ballot papers were used. Heavy security has been provided at the counting centres across the State.

If two candidates get equal number of votes and if a candidate loses by a single vote, then a request for recounting of votes could be made. It is left to the electoral officers to take a final decision on recounting.
