The High Court of Karnataka on Tuesday acquitted ‘Cyanide’ Mohan in one of the rape and murder cases by setting aside the death sentence awarded by a sessions court in Mangaluru.
A divisional bench of Justice Ravi Malimath and Justice John Michael Cunha convicted Mohan of robbing the valuables from the Leelavathi for which he was awarded imprisonment for five years and a fine of Rs 5,000.
Mohan was convicted by the sessions court in Mangaluru for the murder, rape and abduction of Leelavathi of Vamadapadav, Mangaluru.
He was awarded the death sentence by the court.
He had moved the high court seeking relief in this matter.
While hearing the case, the bench noted that there was no proof that cyanide was administered to the victim and that she was abducted and raped by Mohan.
On October 12, Mohan was convicted and awarded life imprisonment by the high court in the rape and murder case of Anita, of Kolimane in Bantwal taluk.
‘Cyanide’ Mohan is accused of raping and murdering of 20 women between 2004 and 2009.
