People in the taluk are forced to reach the district headquarters and other centre using distant routes because of the construction of Bhadra reservoir. There was demand for road between N R Pura and Chikmagalur via Koosagal village by constructing a bridge across Bhadra river. A memorandum in the regard was submitted to the then Member of Parliament and former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
The government had released Rs 33.70 lakh for the purpose in 1978-79, but only Rs 22.5 lakh was spent then. Politicians K M Veerappa Gowda, Begane Ramaiah, H G Govinda Gowda and D B Chandregowda had strived for the sanction of road then.
However, at present, the proposal has been sanctioned due to the lack of willpower among the politicians. People’s representatives presume that the Forest Act may be a hindrance for the proposal as the road passes through Hebbe reserve forest. As a result, people in N R Pura are forced to travel about 96 kms to reach Chikmagalur, which is only 55 kms away from the taluk headquarters.
If the proposed road was developed, people of N R Pura can reach Chikmagalur within 90 minutes instead of the current three-and-a-half hours journey. Similarly, the journey to Bangalore and other districts too will also be made convenient.
Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa had announced Rs 35 crore for the development of road to Rambhapuri Peeta through N R Pura. People demand that the local elected representatives should convince the Chief Minister about the road proposal.
