Day after Shiradi Ghat opens, two die in accident

Barely a day after the Shiradi Ghat stretch was thrown open, two persons were killed on the spot and six others sustained serious injuries in a collision between a tanker and jeep at Kodyakallu near Gundya on NH 48 on Monday.

The deceased are: Rukmini, 45, and Bhavani, 35. They were residents of Perje in Shiribagilu. Jeep driver Chandrashekar, Bhavani’s husband Vishwanath, Sister Lyssi, Jessy and two others were injured in the accident. The tanker was heading from Hassan to Mangaluru and was on the wrong side when the tanker collided with the jeep.

KSRTC buses from Mangaluru will start plying on the stretch from Tuesday morning. Speaking to Deccan Herald, N V Hegde, Mangaluru division controller, KSRTC,  said,  “All buses, including semi-delux, multi-axle plying to Bengaluru, Hassan from Mangaluru will travel via Shiradi Ghat from Tuesday morning.” Shiradi Ghat, which connects Mangaluru with Hassan on National Highway 48, was thrown open to all types of traffic on Sunday.
