Effective action by highway authorities is required in providing safety on state and national highways, said Deputy Commissioner Annies Kanmani Joy.

Chairing a road safety meeting at the DC's office in Madikeri on Sunday, she directed officials of the highway department and National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) to lay emphasis on the safety of motorists on highways.

Noting that road accidents had become frequent on the highways of the district, she asked officials to lay road humps, reflectors, zebra crossings and signboards, wherever necessary.

"Accident zones should be identified. There is a dire need to conduct awareness programmes on road safety. The police department should coordinate with the highway authorities to this end," said the DC.

Superintendent of Police Dr Suman D Pennekar said that the vehicle riders would be sensitized to traffic safety regulations. Accidents zones had been identified in several parts of the district.

Regional Transport Officer Gangadhar, PWD Executive Engineer Ibrahim, KSRTC Madikeri depot Manager Geetha and City Municipal Council Commissioner Ramesh were present at the meeting.
