'Lakshadeepotsava', the lighting of one lakh oil lamps, as part of Makara Sankranthi, was held at Sri Ranganathaswamy temple in Srirangapatna, Mandya district on Monday.

The Deepotsava was launched at 'Godhuli' lagna at 6.30 pm, by Lakshadeepotsava Acharana Samiti members. Oil lamps were arranged on a stretch of 250 mts, from the temple to the Mini Vidhana Soudha Circle, in rows. People participated enthusiastically in lighting the lamps.

Sri Ranganathaswamy temple premises, Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy temple, Pete Narayanaswamy temple, Gangadhareshwara temple were decorated with more than 80,000 lamps, it is said.

According to the samiti members, 1,000 litres of oil was purchased for the occasion. As part of Sankranthi, the presiding deity, Sri Ranganathaswamy, was decorated with butter. Hundreds of people from Mandya, Mysuru, Bengaluru and other places took part in the event.
