Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada MP Captain Brijesh Chowta directed officials from Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) to ensure that their contractor workers receive essential benefits including health security, insurance facilities and special allowances.
During a meeting held with MRPL-ONGC Employees’ Union on key worker issues at Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner’s office on Friday, Brijesh highlighted that workers earning more than Rs 21,000 per month should be provided with Mediclaim benefits.
Workers pointed out that their special allowances had not been doubled even after completing eight years of service. Capt Chowta directed MRPL to review the matter and take steps to increase the allowance.
Another major demand was increasing the insurance amount for workers from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 25 lakh in case of death, either at work or outside the company.
Capt Chowta instructed MRPL officials to review all major issues raised by workers and provide a written response within three days. MRPL-ONGC Employees’ Union expressed gratitude to the MP for listening to the workers’ grievances and making efforts to find solutions.
The meeting was attended by Additional DC Dr G Santhosh Kumar, Assistant Labour Commissioner (Central) Prakash R, Labour Enforcement Officer Nita Rebello, Assistant Labour Commissioner (State) Naziya Banu, MRPL Employees’ Union founder Prashant Moodaikodi, and others.
