Shwetha (19), wife of Prabhakar, a resident of Chinnenahalli in K R Pet, Mandya, was admitted to the hospital on Thursday. Since Shwetha did not develop any labour pain, doctors gave her an injection to induce labour pain on Friday night.

A c-section was performed on her later, but the infant, a girl, was stillborn due to “asphyxiation in the womb”. Subsequently, Shwetha’s condition deteriorated and she died on Saturday afternoon.

In the other case, Roopa of Doddekoppal in K R Nagar, Mysore, was brought to the hospital with a ruptured uterus on Saturday. The doctors performed an emergency c-section on her, but the infant, a boy, had died in the womb itself.

While Superintendent of the hospital, Dr B Krishnamurthy, attributed the deaths to complications, relatives of both the families blamed the doctors’ callousness for the deaths.
