The strike by members of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) reportedly led to the death of a newborn girl at a private hospital on Saturday.

The infant had suffered complications after its birth in a hospital at Gokak. Relatives of the infant, early Saturday, admitted her to a private hospital and paramedics commenced treatment.

But doctors did not come to the hospital, in the wake of the strike. This, despite IMA announcing that only outpatient services will not be available. The infant passed away thereafter.

District health officer Dr Appasab Naratti said if the parents of the deceased infant file a complaint, action will be taken against the private hospital concerned.
