Udupi: A routine traffic inspection in Udupi took a dramatic turn when a car driver allegedly assaulted a police officer and obstructed him from performing his official duty during a vehicle check near the Karavali Bypass in Moodanidambur village.

According to the complaint filed by sub inspector Husseinsab Kashimsab Chapparkar of the Udupi Traffic Police Station, the police were conducting vehicle checks near the bypass when they spotted a car coming from Ambalpady towards Karavali Junction with the driver not wearing a seatbelt.

The officers asked the driver to stop the vehicle. Upon approaching the driver, the sub inspector asked for his name, address, and driving license. However, the driver allegedly responded aggressively, stating loudly that he would not provide any documents.

Despite being informed that he was being stopped for not wearing a seatbelt, the driver refused to comply and attempted to drive off.

When officers moved in front of the vehicle to prevent him from fleeing, the driver finally stopped. On inspecting the documents, the driver was identified as one Kurien. When police issued a notice and asked him to sign it, Kurien reportedly refused. He then attempted to snatch the license from the sub inspector's hand and allegedly assaulted him in the process.

Following the incident, a case has been registered at Udupi Town Police Station under Section 132 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for obstructing a public servant in the discharge of their duty.
