Disclosing this, Minister for Prisons and Horticulture Umesh Katti on Friday stated that the State Government has sanctioned Rs 45 crore towards shifting of jails in the five district centres to the outskirts. Lands will be identified for the purpose. He said that the State Government was committed towards creating basic better amenities at the prisons.

He was speaking at the passing out parade of 28 women warders at a programme organised at the parade opposite to Prison Training Institute (PTI) in the city.

Principal, PTI, P N Jayasimha, who is also the superintendent of Central Prisons of Mysore, in his report said that the training of 38th batch of warders began on December last. For the first time in the history of the institute, the trainees were taken to Women Central Prisons at Vellore and Chennai to introduce them to the functioning of the prisons, for three days from July 8.

Reading out the demands of the institute, Jayasimha urged for 15 per cent of special allowance for the faculty on the lines of Karnataka Police Academy (KPA). The list included quarters for the staff at the institute and measures to take up fencing of the parade grounds.

Shamshad Begum, who has been posted to Hubli Taluk Sub-jail, bagged the first prize in outdoor games, followed by T L Netravathi, Central Prisons, Bangalore, emerging second and Mamatha, Central Prisons of Mysore, standing third. In the indoor category, R Usha, District Jail, Shimoga stood first, followed by T N Veena, District Jail, Tumkur, second and K Parvathi, District Jail, Tumkur, came third. In firing, S Jahnavi, District Sub-jail, Hassan won first prize, followed by K S Indumathi, Bangalore Central Jail, second and R Mamatha, Tumkur Central Jail, third. M S Vidya, Madikeri Central Jail was adjudged an allrounder and Gangavva S Nandannavar, Belgaum Central Jail took home the DG Cup.

Seven released

In a separate function organised inside Central Prisons of Mysore, MLC Sandesh Nagaraj handed over a cheque for Rs 1.41 lakh towards the release of seven prisoners, who had been languishing behind the bars as they were unable to pay the penalty amount even after completing their sentence. Sannegowda and Siddaraju had to pay Rs 50,000 each, Lokesh Rs 20,000, Masana Shetty Rs 10,000, Sundara Rs eight thousand, Mahadev Rs two thousand and Mahesha Rs one thousand. The Minister Umesh Katti handed them over the certificates of their release, bringing smile on their faces. He appealed to the philanthropic minded persons like Sandesh Nagaraj to come forward in securing the release of such prisoners.

Muthulakshmi too

Forest brigand Veerappan’s wife Muthulakshmi, serving sentence in a case, at Mysore jail was one among several women who were presented with the certificates for successfully completing a training on skill development conducted by JSS Mahavidyapeetha.
