Kalaburagi: Economist S P Kothari, who hails from Kalaburagi, has been appointed as the Assistant Secretary for Economic Policy at the US Treasury Department under US President Donald Trump. He has studied at the Nutan Vidyalay Education Institution here.

In a letter to Kothari, White House Treasury Department Liaison Officer Jillian Lane Wyant stated that the appointment is being made with the consent of the US Senate and the approval of the US President.

Kothari holds an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad and a PhD from the University of Iowa in the US. He had served as the director of the Bombay Stock Exchange from 2015 to 2019.

The central government recognized his achievements and honoured him with the Padma Shri award in 2020. Kothari, who has lived in the US for decades, has served as a professor and deputy dean of the Department of Accounting and Finance at the MIT Sloan School of Management there.

From 2019 to 2021, he served as the Chief Economist in the Department of Economic and Risk Analysis at the US Securities and Exchange Commission.
