Former minister Mallikarjuna Nagappa inaugurates the annual day programme and Prathibha Puraskar award ceremony organised by the Zilla Kuruhina Shetty (Nekara) Mahila Sangha in Chikkamagaluru on Sunday.

A community can progress only through education, said former minister Mallikarjuna Nagappa.

He was addressing the annual day programme and the Prathibha Puraskar award ceremony organised by the Zilla Kuruhina Shetty (Nekara) Mahila Sangha on Sunday.

Nagappa said, “Kuruhina Shetty community members are backward both politically and in the status of education. The community members should ensure their children get an education and thereby come up in life.”

The former minister urged the women members of the community to remain organised.

“They should grow politically instead of restricting themselves to elections to the gram, taluk and panchayats and municipal councils only. Women from the community should move ahead to become legislators. They will get to work towards the upliftment of society,” Nagappa advised the women.

Cauvery Handlooms President N Virupaksha said, “Women will be trained in weaving for 45 days with a stipend of Rs 4,500 a month. Financial assistance will be given for the purchase looms.”

Forty-four top scorers in SSLC and pre-university examinations from the community were felicitated.
