Eight peacocks died after consuming food grains laced with poison in Hulikatti village of Shiggaon taluk, on Friday.

The incident occurred when the peacocks from the sanctuary in Bankapur came in search of food at a field owned by Fakkira Gowda. He had apparently sprayed poison on the germinated seeds in order to avoid animals and birds from grazing on them.

The villagers suspect that apart from those which died many other peacocks also might have eaten the grains. The forest officers and veterinary doctors arrived at the spot for examination.

Range Forest Officer R S Nagashetty promised suitable action after investigation. He said a complaint will be filed against Gowda.
