The deceased has been identified as Kalyani (96), a resident of Mundaje village. Her son, Jayaram (58), is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital in Mangaluru. The mother and son were living together in their home.

When neither of them emerged from the house for an extended period, concerned neighbours checked in and found both of them lying unconscious inside. It is believed that the two may have consumed the pills on the night of May 10 or May 11 early morning.

By the time police arrived at the scene, Jayaram was unable to speak. Both were initially rushed to a hospital in Ujire, where Kalyani succumbed to her condition on the evening of May 12. As Jayaram’s condition worsened, he was shifted to a hospital in Mangaluru for further treatment.

Sources said Jayaram’s brother and nephews would visit them once a week. Jayaram was known to be an artist . A case has been registered at the Dharmasthala police station.
