A 22-year-old makhna elephant was found dead at MM Hills Wildlife Division, near Hanur, on Monday.

Forest department officials said that the pachyderm, which had damaged a solar fence near Anjalagere (Bendagere) forest on Monday to drink water from a lake, might have died after quenching its thirst. The elephant suffered from an infection on the right side of its skull.  It might have been suffering from other ailments too, which might have resulted in its death, said Javed Mumtaj, conservator of forests, wildlife division, MM Hills .
The post-mortem was conducted by veterinarian Dr Fayaz.
