A wild elephant sauntered into the streets of Haliyala town, near Karwar in Uttara Kannada district on Friday morning and created panic among the town's residents.

Petrified by seeing the pachyderm in the town, people called the Forest department officials who came along with the police, and were successful in driving the jumbo back into the forest.

The elephant, however, did not cause any damage to lives and property police said.
