Narasimharajapura (Chikkamagaluru): A 56 year old farmer was trampled to death by a wild elephant at Keregadde near Seethapura in N R Pura taluk.

According to the officials, the deceased is Umesh.

For the past four days, an elephant had been sighted near Kesave and Nagaramakki and appeared again on Saturday. Villagers from the surrounding areas had gathered to chase it back into the forest by bursting firecrackers.

After the elephant moved toward the forest behind the school, everyone returned, except for Umesh. When they went back to search for him, Umesh's body was found, trampled by the elephant. Police and forest department officials visited the spot.

Villagers accused the forest department of failing to take action to capture or relocate the elephant or drive it back into the forest.
