Children from flood-hit families should be enrolled in residential schools to ensure that classes are not affected by the disaster, Lokayukta Vishwanath Shetty said on Tuesday.
He was speaking to reporters after a meeting with officials of the district administration.
“There is a possibility of disruption in children’s education. Several private institutions have come forward to educate the children and this help should be utilised. Flood-affected children should be compulsorily enrolled in residential schools,” he said.
Deputy director of Education department Walter D'Mello said 763 children were among the flood victims and 80% of them had been enrolled in nearby schools and arrangements would be made for the remaining ones.
During the interaction, the Lokayukta appreciated the measures taken by the district administration to mitigate the sufferings of the flood victims.
He said a report should be prepared within a week on restoring Mangaluru-Mysuru highway, which has been closed after the road was washed away at several places.
Thammaiah, deputy director of the department of Animal Husbandry, said 47 cattle had been killed during the floods and landslides. He said care was being provided to those that survived the disaster at a camp in Koodige.
