ESI benefits are likely to be extended to the unorganised sector, although not in the individual capacity, but for families depending on contract workers, said Labour Commissioner S R Umashankar.
Besides, it is also expected to extend the benefits of Food Security Bill under the same scheme, he said.
Speaking at the valedictory of the Southern Regional Training programme organised by the National Centre for Labour, here on Thursday, he admitted that the sector was not recognised for long in the country.
“However, over the past five years, this sector has been in the reckoning and is provided benefits available under the various State and Central-sponsored schemes,” he said.
