Senior politician and former union minister Yashwant Sinha on Sunday said it would be prudent to go back to paper ballots as electronic voting machines (EVMs) were not reliable.

Speaking during a seminar on ‘Democracy - a threat to Constitution’ here, Sinha said several EVMs did not even make it to the strongrooms. “There are reports that those in powerful and influential positions are ensuring that the EVMs don’t make it to the counting centres. There are also reports that there are gadgets in the market, which could be used to tamper EVMs. The Election Commission of India should take note of this,” he said.

Sinha said that the BJP, which had opposed Goods and Service Tax (GST), had brought the new tax regime into force. It was now answerable to the people on its change of stand, he added.
