Mitra Heraje, retired Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), was arrested and released on ‘station bail’ for driving his car in an inebriated state and ramming a two-wheeler on the wrong side at Battagudde on late Saturday night.

According to the police, Heraje was driving his car from Circuit House to Battagudde Junction on the wrong side.

He not only disrupted the movement of traffic plying from the opposite direction but rammed a two-wheeler. Heraje, however, did not stop but attempted to flee from the spot.

The public, who gathered at the spot after the accident, stopped the car and gheroaed Heraje.

As a large number of people had gathered at the spot, police rushed to the spot and resorted to mild lathi charge in order to disperse the crowd.

Mangaluru City Commissioner of Police T R Suresh said the traffic police have booked a case against Heraje on charges of drunken driving and wrong side driving. He was arrested and later released.

DCP (Crime and Traffic) Uma Prashanth said a case was registered against Heraje under IPC Sections 279 and 388. The vehicle was seized and investigation is on.

Heraje had entered the Police Department as sub-inspector and had retired as additional SP.

He is a recipient of chief minister’s gold medal for meritorious services.

He also had served as vice president of Karnataka State Retired Police Officers’ Welfare Association and president of Dakshina Kannada District Retired Police Officers’ Welfare Association.
