“Just like students are not allowed to write exams if they have less than 70 per cent attendance, MLAs who do not participate in the Assembly sessions should be banned from contesting elections. An Act should be formed in this regard,” said former MP A H Vishwanath.

Speaking to media persons, prior to an interaction programme organised by the Kodagu District Kannada Sahitya Parishat on his writings at the Press Club, here, on Saturday, Vishwanath lamented the poor attendance in both the houses of the Legislature.

“In Belagavi session, few MLAs didn’t participate even for a single day. Many come to the premises of the Assembly simply to chat. They don't even enter the House. Vidhana Soudha which is a forum to discuss the problems of poor now looks like a shopping mall. One can see followers of politicians decked with ornaments everywhere,” he said.

Speaking on literature, Vishwanath said that if every individual registered his/her life and experiences through writing, it could be a great contribution to the literary world. Meanwhile, he felt that the literary works of politicians are treated as ‘untouchables’.
