A sessions court has directed Asianet News Network Pvt Ltd to pay a compensation of Rs 50 lakh to actor-turned politician Ramya (Divya Spandana) for telecasting a fake news claiming that she is involved in cricket betting and spot fixing in the 2013 IPL cricket matches.

The IIX Additional City Civil and Sessions Court Judge Patil Nagalinganagouda passed the order on April 26 stating that the respondents should give the compensation to the victim within two months from passing of the order.

In the order, the judge observed that there is no evidence to prove the involvement of Ramya who was also the brand ambassador of Royal Challengers Bengaluru for indulging in cricket betting and spot fixing. The television channel has destroyed the journalism ethics by publishing such a baseless news. It also tarnishes the image of Ramya. The channel has caused irreparable damage to the image and the reputation of the actor, the judge said in the order.
