Farmers here are worried about the fall in prices of green chillies. A 20 kg of green chilly fetched between Rs 170 to Rs 320.
G4, Bili Priyanka chilly fetched Rs 170; Oriyanka, Guntoor fetched Rs 200 and Ulka green chilly fetched Rs 320.
Green chilly shandy market is held on Friday, Saturday and Sunday in a week. The farmers arrive at market ferrying green chillies from the neighbourhood villages. The merchants fix the price for the green chillies. As green chillies are perishable commodity, farmers accept the price fixed by the merchants. The farmers were expecting good price for chillies this year.
Demand is less
According to the merchants, the demand is less as a huge quantity of chillies arrived the market.
H M Rangaswamy and Gopal, farmers from Haralli and Bembalooru said, “Green chillies are grown for three months by the farmers to earn for rainy season. To cultivate green chillies, one need to water the plants once in two days. With the lack of rain and shortage of water, farmers strived hard to save the crops. Further, labourers are paid Rs 250 for plucking the chillies. The expenditure on the cultivation of chillies is more when compared to the income.”
