Breaking all the traditions and rituals, Kamala tonsured her head and immersed her mother’s ashes in the Mallaghatta tank and performed last rites. Lakshmamma her mother had died on August 26 at Bhadravati in Shimoga.

Owing to family dispute, Kamala was not even informed about her mother’s death and she came to know of the incident from others only five days later.

Deeply hurt by this attitude of her parental family, Kamala decided to tonsure her head and perform last rites when the family members didn’t even invite her for the 11th-day rituals.

Kamala told Deccan Herald, “ I don’t aspire to create a revolution by breaking all the traditions. Girls have the same right as boys and by performing the last rites, I have fulfiled my duties towards my mother. My husband Swarnakumar and in-laws have stood by me.”

On June 24, Indramma, a KAS officer tonsured her head and performed last rites of her father. However, Indramma’s father didn’t have any male offspring. But in Kamala’s case, her mother Lakshmamma has male offspring.
