Madikeri: A farmer died after being attacked by a wild elephant in Dabbadka of Chembu village in Madikeri taluk on Wednesday night.

The deceased has been identified as one Shivappa (72), a native of Koppa.

The incident took place near his residence. A seriously injured Shivappa died on the way to hospital.

Villagers and relatives of Shivappa staged a protest in front of Kodagu Institute of Medical Sciences (KoIMS) where the body was kept.

Virajpet MLA and Chief Minister's Legal advisor A S Ponnanna consoled the locals.

Chembu Gram Panchayat President Teertharama said that the wild elephants have been roaming around in Chembu, Urubaili, Dabbadka, Kanthabailu, Kudurepaya and surrounding regions.

People are scared to come out of their houses. The wild elephant which attacked and killed the farmer should be captured, he added.
