Madikeri: A farmer died after being attacked by a wild elephant at Dabbadka near Chembu village, Madikeri taluk of Kodagu district, on Wednesday night.

Shivappa (72), a native of Koppa, is the deceased.

The incident took place near his house. A seriously injured Shivappa breathed his last on the way to hospital.

Villagers and relatives of Shivappa staged a protest in front of Kodagu Institute of Medical Sciences (KoIMS), where the body was kept. Virajpet MLA and Chief Minister’s Legal advisor A S Ponnanna consoled the people.

Chembu Gram Panchayat President Teertharama said that the wild elephants had been roaming around in Chembu, Urubaili, Dabbadka, Kanthabailu, Kudurepaya and surrounding regions.

Panic

Fearing for their lives, people are not coming out of their houses. The wild elephant which attacked and killed the farmer should be captured, he added.
