Bengaluru: The High Grounds police on Tuesday registered a First Information Report (FIR) following a complaint on BJP MLA Basangouda Patil Yatnal for his "objectionable" remarks on gold smuggling suspect Ranya Rao.
The case was registered after Akula Anuradha lodged a complaint earlier in the day. In the FIR, it was stated that Yatnal's remarks against Ranya were "objectionable, vulgar and disrespectful".
The complainant also claimed that Ranya was a multi-language actress and had respect in the society, which remarks like the ones made by Yatnal spoil.
As per the FIR, Yatnal, who was speaking to the media in Vijayapura had said that Ranya hid the gold wherever she could on her body.
The complainant saw the video being telecasted in the media on March 17 and then approached the police, the FIR noted. When DH contacted the complainant on the phone, she refused to offer a comment on if she was related to Ranya or how she was connected to the case.
The case was registered under Section 79 (word, gesture or act intended to insult modesty of a woman) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Further probe is on.
"Since the incident occurred in Vijayapura, the case will likely be transferred there due to jurisdiction," a police officer said.
