Vegetation on a vast tract of 50-acre eucalyptus plantation was destroyed in a fire at Sankse in the taluk.

The plantation belongs to the Karnataka Forest Development Corporation.

The fire was noticed on Friday and it continued on Saturday. Two fire tenders from N R Pura and Koppa are engaged in dousing the fire. By the time Forest Guard Manjunath reached the spot, the fire had begun to spread due to the wind and he suffered injuries in the fire.

Though attempts were made to douse the fire, it began to spread due to the wind. The fire also engulfed the cow shed of one Saju at Chittikodige, situated on the fringes of the plantation. Plastic drum, cycle, clothes and dry grass in the cowshed were gutted in the fire.

Rubber plantations of Denny, M P Joseph, Mathu Kurikose, Eliyas and Yakub too have been gutted.

The forest officials said that the fire has been brought under control by Saturday evening.
