The green cover of the district is depleting a lot because of forest fires. While natural forest fire is very rare, the most cases of such fire have human hands behind them.

Hundreds of acres of forest land have been burnt in the Attur reserve forest on the Suntikoppa-Kushalnagar Road. Similar accidents have been taking place every year. However, the Forest Department is taking precautionary measures to protect the precious trees.

Fire trenches have been dug by the Forest Department staff at the Nagarahole National Park and the Mavakal reserve forest. Dry shrubs are cleared as there are great possibilities of shrubs catching fire during the summer. Clearing of shrubs will prevent the fire from spreading further. Preventive measures are also taken on the Mavakal-Anechowkuru stretch and Hunasur-Kannanur.

The Forest Department staff are on high alert to check forest fire during the three months. Patrolling is being carried out in the villages, tribal hamlets and forest areas. Suspicious activities are being noted.

Forest Department officials said that satellite surveillance is being done to trace the incidents of forest fire.
