The state government had signed an MoU with UK’s Chevening Scholarships programme in 2024 to launch a unique joint scholarship for women graduates from Karnataka to study for a postgraduate programme in UK.

The first batch consists of Athena Rose Joseph, Chandana Anjinappа, Niharikaa Naresh, Shweta N Hegde and Sushma Shyamsundar.

Congratulating the scholarship recipients, Higher Education Minister Dr M C Sudhakar requested the British High Commission to increase the number of beneficiaries from the state.

“I would like to see students from government colleges in the list in the coming years,” he said.

Sudhakar said that there was a need to train government college students to fill out such applications online.

British Deputy High Commissioner to Karnataka & Kerala Chandru Iyer said, “Empowering women and girls in UK and around the world is a priority for us. I am glad Karnataka is the first state in South India to take up the offer.”

The Chevening-Karnataka scholarship is a joint scholarship offered by UK and Karnataka governments to fully fund five women graduates, preferably from government colleges, every year for next 3 years to pursue a master’s programme in any UK university in any stream.

From Karnataka, 1,827 applications were received, 155 were finalised and 20 were selected for interview.
