Forest, revenue and police officials cleared about five acres of forest land at Diddalli, Channayyanakote GP, of encroachments on Wednesday. Police arrested eight persons including tribal leader Appaji for protesting naked against the clearing. The eight persons were booked for indecent behaviour, disrupting officials from performing their duty and encroachment of forest land.

Temporary huts were constructed by 574 people on the forest land. DySP Sampath Kumar, PCI Mahesh, Medappa, six PSIs, forest officials and more than 150 police personnel cleared the encroachment within 45 minutes early Wednesday. Forest officer Sooryasen said, Diddalli comes under reserve forest. There is no government land in its jurisdiction. He added that they decided to clear the encroachment legally.

Susheela, an encroacher, threatened to commit suicide if the huts were cleared, insisting that they had lived all their lives in the huts and had not come from elsewhere.

Budakattu Krishikara Sangha Virajpet taluk president J K Ramu urged the authorities to rehabilitate those who lost their huts in Diddalli forest limits.
