Davangere: The Azad Nagar police, who are investigating the murder attempt of JDS leader T Asgar, have arrested Congress leader and former actress Savita Mallesh Naik from Mayakonda assembly constituency.
The police, who took Savita into custody and questioned her on Friday, arrested her after it was confirmed that she was involved in the murder attempt case. She was produced before a judge and sent to judicial custody.
Congress leader Khalid Pailwan attacked and stabbed Asgar, who was participating in the Tipu Jayanti organized in Basha Nagar on November 10. Asgar, who was seriously injured, is undergoing treatment at the hospital. The police are searching for the absconding accused.
The investigation has revealed that Savita helped the accused Khalid Pailwan, who attempted to murder Asgar. She provided shelter and financial assistance to the accused and helped him escape, said a police officer.
Savita Mallesh Naik was a strong ticket aspirant from the Mayakonda assembly constituency. Disappointed after losing the ticket, she contested as an independent candidate and lost the polls. She later returned to the Congress.
