They were excavating clay for making of Ganesh idols on the outskirts of Desur village on the Belgaum-Khanapur road. A couple of minors who were assisting them had a providential escape.
Police have given the name of deceased as Shivaji Bhadange (40), Ravalu Gawada (30) and Elar D’Souza (33), all residents of Belgundi village in the taluk. The injured have been admitted to the district hospital for treatment.
Tahsildar Shashidhar Bagali and legislator Sanjay Patil visited the spot. Belgaum Rural police have registered a case.
