Udupi: Police inspector from Udupi district police opened fire on a notorious criminal Isaac from Garuda Gang when he attempted to flee from custody while being brought to Udupi on Wednesday.
Udupi SP Dr Arun K said that a special team was formed under the supervision of the Manipal Police Station Inspector, Malpe Circle Inspector, and other senior officers to arrest Isaac and his associates.
The team who arrested Isaac along with three others in the Channarayapatna Police Station limits and were escorting them to Manipal in the police vehicle. When the vehicle reached Gudde Angadi, under the Hiriyadka Police Station limits, at around 7:15 pm, Isaac claimed he urgently needed to vomit and attend nature's call. Immediately, he turned violent and pushed the police personnel accompanying him by twisting the leading chain fastened to his hand.
When two sub-inspectors tried intervene, he tried to escape. In the melee, the chain struck the front windshield of the police vehicle, shattering the glass and injuring the officers and staff.
Despite multiple warnings from Manipal police inspector Devaraj, Isaac continued his escape attempt. When the accused did not comply, a warning shot was fired in the air. As Isaac continued trying to flee, he was shot in the leg. The injured Isaac and the injured police personnel have been admitted to hospital in Manipal for treatment.
It may be recalled that Isaac had given police a tough chase when a team from Nelamangala Rural Police Station attempted to arrest him a few days ago.
While chasing his car, he accompanied by a woman, recklessly tried to evade arrest, and damaged two public vehicles and a police vehicle in the process. However, Isaac escaped and the police had taken the woman into custody. The Manipal police had registered a case and a team was formed to arrested him.
