The Goa government has imposed a ban on fish supply from Karnataka and other states on the suspicion that Formalin (used to preserve dead bodies) was being used to keep the fish fresh.

The ban came into effect on Wednesday and will remain in force till July 31. Tens of lorries transporting fish were stopped at the Polem checkpost near Majali in the taluk by the Goa police and sent back.

Officials of Goa's department of food and narcotics prevention had raided fish markets in Salcet and North Goa on July 13. It was found that Formalin had been used to keep the fish fresh.
