It was time for golden glory at the fifth convocation of the Agriculture University, here on Wednesday, as students bagged gold medals in fours and fives.

As the students were presented the medals, joy knew bounds for their parents. Suresh, a BSc student of the agriculture college, Bheemarayanagudi, Amaresh of the agriculture technology college, Raichur, won five medals. Raghavendra J of the agriculture college, Raichur, won four medals.

For Suresh, the four acres of land that his father owns did not come in handy as the crops failed. Instead, Suresh continued his education with the money his father Ashok earned through a paan shop in Surapur. Their native place is Rakmapur in Surapur taluk of the district.

Amaresh, the gold medal winner, hails from Phooolabhavi in Lingasugur taluk. His father Basavaraja is an agriculturist and the family owns four acres. Given that they depend on dryland irrigation, the income is nothing to write home about. He is presently studying food processing technology at IIT, Kharagpur.

Governor Vajubhai Vala was the chief guest, Agriculture Minister Krishna Byregowda presided. VC Dr P M Salimath was also present.
