The government may expand the Anti-Communal Task Force (ACTF) beyond coastal areas after its institution, Home Minister G Parameshwara said on Wednesday.

“Initially, we planned to establish ACTF only in two (coastal) districts, but now we may expand it to other districts. The ACTF will be formed on the lines of the Anti-Naxal Force (ANF),” Parameshwara said. “Already polarisation (communal) is happening in several places.”

Earlier in the day, he told reporters that the Director General & Inspector General of Police (DG&IGP) had sent a proposal to constitute an Anti-Communal Task Force (ACTF) and the government would soon take a decision.

Parameshwara said the government had asked the state police chief to send a proposal to form ACTF.

“We, at the government level, will review the proposal and decide soon. We will decide in the next three or four days,” the home minister said.

In the budget, the government had announced that it would disband the ANF following the surrender of six known Maoists in the state.

There were speculations in police circles that the ANF itself would be reconstituted as the ACTF, but it is unlikely as the top police officials are not in favour of disbanding the ANF.
