The State government has failed to identify bonded labourers and rehabilitate them, said Jeethadalu Nirmoolana Zilla Jagriti Samiti member Yogeeshwari Vijay.

At a workshop on rehabilitation of bonded labourers organised at the taluk panchayat auditorium here on Tuesday, she said more than 330 bonded labourers have been identified in the taluk, but only a few of them have been rehabilitated by providing government benefits. Still 102 bonded labourers have been forced to fend for themselves, she said.

The organisation’s report on chained bonded labourers in Angaralya in June 2000, foced the government to take note of it.

No action yet

However, even after a decade, the government is yet to act on a few guidelines suggested by S R Shankar on rehabilitation of bonded labourers. therefore,  the practice of bonded labour still prevails in the State, she lamented.

Jeevika’s Narayanswamy said the organisation though based in Anekal, has played a pivotal role in eradicating the practice and come out with suggestions on rehabilitation.

A play on bonded labourers was staged during the workshop. Tahsildar Mahesh Babu, taluk panchayat executive officer Jayaram and Block Education officer Y C Ravikumar were present.
