Mangaluru: “Hard work, consistency in studies, and the support and guidance of lecturers as well as my parents helped me crack the NEET exam,” said Nikhil Sonnad from Expert PU College in Mangaluru, who has secured the 17th rank.
“I focused on building a strong foundation in the subjects and began problem-solving from the very beginning. Solving problems helped me apply the theories I learned in the classroom to practical situations,” he told DH.
Hailing from Vijayapura, Nikhil said, “I used to grasp whatever was taught in the classroom. During study hours, I would revise those lessons and solve related problems. If I couldn’t solve any, my teachers would guide me the next day.”
He added that frequent mock tests conducted by the college also helped him understand the type of questions asked in the entrance exam.
"I was confident of my results. However, I did not expect 17th rank," he said.
“As both my parents are doctors, I was naturally inclined towards the medical field, constantly hearing medical terminology at home,” he said. Nikhil is the son of Dr Siddappa Sonnad, a neurosurgeon, and Dr Meenakshi, an ophthalmologist.
He also mentioned that in his free time, he enjoyed playing badminton and chess, and writing poems. “Chess helped improve my concentration,” he added.
Nidhi K G, another topper from Expert PU College has secured AIR 84. Hailing from Somwarpet in Kodagu, she said "It was in class nine that I decided to pursue my studies in medicine after my PU.
"During my PU, I was focused and had an aim for a rank below 100. Though the NEET exams were tough, I gave my best. I dedicated myself for studies during the past two years. I hope to pursue MBBS at AIIMS Delhi or Bangalore Medical College," she added.
"I love painting and yoga," she added.
She is the daughter of K H Ganapathi, an Assistant Sub-Inspector, and Gunavathi, a schoolteacher.
