The High Court on Monday ordered notice to the State Election Commission in connection with a petition seeking action against the taluk panchayat (TP) and zilla panchayat (ZP) members who have failed to declare their assets.
Hearing a PIL petition by Shashidhar, president of the Karnataka State Police Maha Sangha, the division bench comprising Chief Justice D H Waghela and Justice S N Satyanarayana ordered notice to the Election Commission and the State government.
Noting that it is the responsibility of the Election Commission as per Article 243 (K) of the Constitution to see to it that the ZP members adhere to the Constitution, the petitioner contended that as per the records, out of 285 Zilla Panchayat members, only 30 have submitted their assets and liabilities to the Regional Commissioner, Bangalore, who is the authority concerned.

Hearing a petition by his parents, who had moved the High Court seeking a CBI probe into the case, suspecting it to be a murder, Justice Anand Byra Reddy reserved the orders.The student of Dayanandasagar College of Engineering had jumped to death from the seventh floor of his college building on August 13, 2009.
