

The scheme has already been in effect in many states. Union Labour Minister Mallikarjun Kharge launched the scheme in Bangalore by presenting 12-millionth card to a beneficiary of the scheme.
Scheme meant for labourers of unorganised sector provides treatment for 725 ailments. The labourers have to obtain benefits of the scheme by paying Rs 30 per year and get treatment worth up to Rs 30,000 in select hospitals. Five members of a family are entitled for the benefit. National Insurance Corporation will provide the service. The Centre and the State will contribute towards premium of the policy at the ratio of 75 and 25. Initially the scheme is being launched in five districts - Bangalore Rural, Mysore, Dakshina Kannada, Belgaum and Shimoga districts. From 2010-11 the scheme will be extended to other districts of the State. Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa announced that he would earmark required funds for extending the scheme in his next budget.
Kharge said that Rs 120 crore was required to extend the scheme across the State. He said the Centre was contemplating fixing minimum daily wage for the workers and provide health benefits for them.
