Chikkamagaluru: Heavy rains lashed Malnad area in Chikkamagaluru throwing normal life out of gear on Sunday. 

Incessant rain has been lashing Kudremukh area and river Tunga is in spate. River overflowed on Gandhi Maidan in Sringeri town. As a result, parking area remained submerged, thus affecting the parked vehicles. 

Paddy fields, plantations have remained under water. Farmers are fearing loss of crops. Owing to the heavy rainfall,vehicle users were inconvenienced while driving on Charmadi Ghat.

The district administration has declared holiday for schools and anganwadi centres in five taluks of Mudigere, Kalasa, Koppa, Sringeri, Narasimharajapura, five hoblis in Chikkamagaluru taluk on Monday. 

Sringeri taluk received 132 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours. While, Kigga received 152.8 mm and Kerekatte received 154 mm rainfall. 

Due to the heavy downpour, National Highway 169 connecting Sringeri and Mangaluru has been submerged at Nemmar, bringing traffic to a halt.

The Bharatiteertha Road in Sringeri has also been inundated. Similarly, Kurubakeri Road is submerged, with water flooding both sides of the stretch, leaving the middle portion looking like an island.

In Shivamogga

Rains intensified in Shivamogga district on Sunday. The inflow into Tunga, Bhadra and Linganamakki dams went up following copious rains in catchment areas. River Tunga is flowing at dangerous level in Shivamogga. Chakra in Hosanagar taluk recorded 21 cm of rain in the 24 hours ending Sunday 8 am. Davangere received intermittent rains throughout the day.

Kalaburagi and Yadgir districts in Kalyana Karnataka received heavy rains on Sunday.

Cut-off box - 2-day red alert sounded in U-K The IMD has sounded Red Alert till Tuesday indicating heavy rains across Uttara Kannada district for the next two days. The district administration has asked the people in low-lying areas and those on the banks of the river to move to safter places. Tourists have been banned from visiting the beaches Deputy Commissioner K Lakshmipriya said.
