A clash between Hindu Jagaran Vedike workers and a group of Muslim youth, broke out in Hosapete town on Monday afternoon, during the Chhatrapathi Shivaji Jayanti procession taken out by the Vedike.

Police said that trouble broke out when a Vedike worker attempted to tie a flag to a pole and was thrashed by a group of Muslim youths.

Enraged by this, Jagaran Vedike workers began pelting stones at the nearby mosque and shattered its glass windows.

The violence later aggravated when the two groups clashed and a slug fest broke out.

Assistant Commissioner Gargi Jain rushed to the spot as the police quelled the mob and pleaded with the angry protesters to remain calm and call off their protest.

Meanwhile, the Vedike workers have blocked the highway and all vehicles bound for Shivamogga and Raichur have come to a halt. Traffic is piling up on the highway.
