Mangaluru: With IMD sounding an orange alert in Dakshina Kannada, the district administration has declared holiday for schools, anganwadis and PU colleges on December 3.
Deputy Commissioner Mullai Muhilan M P said all the precautionary measures have been taken and school and college heads have been asked not to use old and dilapidated buildings for holding classes. As the district is receiving heavy rainfall, the public have been advised not to go near water bodies especially rivers, rivulets and electricity poles.
People, visitors, and tourists have been advised not to venture near low-lying areas and on the banks of rivers and sea. All fishermen who ventured into deep sea fishing have been advised to return to the shore.

The IMD has stated that the Arabian sea will be turbulent till December 6. Hence, the fishermen in the district have been advised not to venture into sea, said joint director of fisheries department.
The DC said that he has directed officials to take precautionary measures in the low-lying areas, areas that are prone to landslides, and flood. Steps should be taken to facilitate easy flow of water in the storm water drains by removing silt and ensure that there is no artificial flood. All incident commanders should respond to the grievances from the public. The minor irrigation department should clear all the drift wood that washed along the water near the vented dams. The department of fire service, mescom, PWD, National Highway, NHAI, Gram Panchayats and ULBs should work in coordination, he added.
Heavy rains lash Dakshina Kannada
Meanwhile, heavy rain coupled with lightning and thunder lashed various parts of Dakshina Kannada on Monday. The sky had remained overcast throughout the day. When the skies opened up suddenly in the evening, citizens, especially two-wheeler riders and pedestrians seemed to be caught unawares. Water flowed on the roads. Following the rainfall, there was traffic congestion on several major roads in the city.
Rain water entered the Nethravathi hall of Zilla Panchayat when Upa Lokayukta was receiving grievances from the public in the evening.
